WHY CHIROPRACTIC CARE FOR COLIC?
We know as difficult as colic is for a baby, it is just as hard for the parents. You’re both cranky, tired and irritable. Don’t you think you owe it to yourself and your baby to give chiropractic care a try?
Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective. We use gentle touch, never fast movements or heavy pressure. Most parents say that they wouldn’t even know we are making adjustments if we hadn’t explained what we were doing at the time.
Chiropractic adjustments make the body function better. For most adults, the symptom may be pain, indigestion, or insomnia. For babies, it may be colic, reflux or ear infections. The symptom itself isn’t the problem – it is a sign that there IS a problem. Adjustments normalize the body and allow it to function at 100%, which is why symptoms are relieved.
Chiropractic care is a gentle, safe, and a highly successful option for treating infants with colic. Here’s what a chiropractic adjustment can do for a baby suffering from colic:
- Reduces stress, increasing relaxation (essential for developing brain and nervous system)
- Improves latch for babies who are breastfeeding, decreasing gas in the stomach
- Alleviates nerve disturbances to the digestive system that cause gas to build up causing discomfort
- Restores motion to joints and eliminates discomfort resulting from irritated nerves (relieves the tension from prolonged crying)
DOES YOUR BABY HAVE COLIC?
As any new parent knows, colic is a term used to describe a condition wherein an infant cries uncontrollably and inexplicably for more than three hours per day. Colic has been widely attributed to digestive problems and indigestion, but is still not well understood–largely because the patient can’t describe his or her symptoms.
When adults and kids have a headache, neck pain, or back pain they talk about it and complain about it. When a baby has a headache, neck pain, or back pain they can’t complain about it or talk about it so they cry. Many parents have said at least once that they don’t know why their baby is crying. They said they have tried everything, but did they try visiting a chiropractor that specializes in pediatrics?
IS IT…INDIGESTION?
At one time infantile colic was thought to be a result of the child having indigestion. Today, infantile colic is described as “unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old, occurring more than 3 hours a day, 3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, generally occurring in the late afternoon or evening”. Now, as a parent, is that an acceptable answer from a doctor that is supposed to be an expert on babies?
We don’t thinks so.
Many babies, especially those that have experienced difficult births, have distortions present in their upper spines which–while they will work themselves out over time–can cause a cascade of symptoms in their early months. Correction of these subluxations through manipulation of the upper cervical spine by a chiropractor has been shown in a 1999 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics to result in dramatically better results when treating colic than through the use of traditionally prescribed medication.
TRAUMA FROM BIRTH
A study published in the German medical journal “Manual Medicine” involved a group of 1258 babies who had their spines examined by two medical doctors within 5 days of birth. Of this group 211 suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity, or sleeplessness. Manual examination of the babies revealed spinal abnormalities in 95% of the group.
As a chiropractor who specializes in pediatrics our goal is to help your baby grow naturally and properly. When a doctor is performing a cesarean delivery, it is estimated that the baby is removed with between 50-88 pounds of force. There are also chances that clamps or a vacuum might be used to assist in delivery.
Now I want you to imagine what this experience might feel like and how your head and neck might feel after?
If a child has a subluxation then there is a great chance that it is interfering with your child’s natural function and causing discomfort or even pain. A light chiropractic adjustment to clear up a subluxation helps the body heal and restore proper nervous system function. As a result, not only will your child(ren) breastfeed better, they may cry less due to the lack of present subluxations. They are also at a decreased risk for allergies, ADD/ADHD, colds, flus, ear infections, asthma, and delayed development. Specialized pediatric chiropractic care for your child can make a world of difference in their life and yours.
